Jay was a production worker at Metro Components Limited (MCL), which made components and accessories for the automotive industry. He had worked at MCL for almost eight years as a welder, along with fifteen other men in the plant. All had received training in welding, both on the job and through company sponsored external programmes. They had friendly relations and got along very well with one another. They played volleyball in the playground regularly before retiring to the quarters allotted by the company. They ate together in the company canteen cracking jokes on each other and making fun of anyone who dared to peep into their privacy during lunch hour. Most of the fellows had been there for quite some time, except for two men who had joined the ranks only two months back.

Jay was generally considered to be the leader of the group, so it was no surprise that when the foreman of the department was transferred and his vacancy was announced, Jay applied for the job and got it There only four other There were only four other applicants for the job, two from mechanical section and two from outside. When there was a formal announcement of the appointment on a Friday afternoon, everyone in the group congratulated Jay. They literally carried him on their shoulders and bought him snacks and celebrated the event enthusiastically On Monday morning Jay joined duty as Foreman. It was company practice for all foremen to wear blue jacket and a white shirt. Each man's coat had his name badge sewn onto the left side pocket. The company had given two pairs to Jay. He was proud to wear the coat to work on Monday. People who saw him from a distance went upto him and admired the new blue coat. There was a lot of teasing around calling Jay as 'Hero' or 'Officer'. After about five minutes of fun, all of the men went back to work Jay went back to his office to get more familiar with his new job and environment there At noon, all the men broke for lunch and went to the canteen to eat and enjoy fun as usual. Jay was busy when they left but followed after them a few minutes, later. He bought the food coupon, took the snacks and tea and turned to face the open canteen. Back in the left side corner of the room was his old work group, on the right-hand side of the canteen were all the other foremen of the plant in their blue coats. At that point of time, silence descended on the canteen. Suddenly both groups looked at Jay anxiously, waiting to see which group he would eat with.
Whom do you think Jay will eat with? Why?
@Charu Rawat Jai will sit with his new group at RIGHT to know each other well and he can discuss with them about his new responsibility because everything is new in this group for him so to make himself comfortable he need to spend some with them and as his old friends know him very well so they will not mind it
@Charu Rawat Jay would move to the right hand corner of the canteen where other foreman members of the plant were present.
Reason:-
1- Embrace the changes and prepare yourself to work in that environment
2- By spending time with them jay will be able to know the,
a) policy, rules and regulations
b) Jay would be able to know their experiences with the work
3- Jay would be able to focus more on behavioural management.
4- Jay would also be able to know that how the management is working in terms of leading and controlling
5- Jay would be able to improve his inter-personal skill
6- Jay would be breaking his habit by taking this step but not the relation with his previous teammates.
Jay will eat with his old work group choose for Left Side
Jay will sit with his new group, try to learn about the working culture and his roles and responsibilities. He would further try to make a place where all people can sit and enjoy their food and share their experiences and jokes together, irrespective of post and position in the company.
If you were one of the foremen, what would you have done to make Jay's transition easier?
Jay should be welcome to the group and since he has a positive attitude and temperament he should be heard too.
If I had been there, I would have supported him if there was any trouble I would have tried to resolve it.
Jay should sit left side with the old group this time (last time atleast) because they supported and cheered him for his success, and being successful support is always required no matter how deserving or capable you are. May be next time he will choose to sit with the new group to understand his job responsibilities well and to maintain harmony among his colleagues.
Jay should sit on the right side with the group of foremen. As he is a new member of this team, he will get an opportunity to interact with this new group. In the process, Jay will learn about the intricacies of the new job and also develop interpersonal skills. He can always interact with the members of his old group sitting on left side whenever he gets an opportunity.
1) Jay would eat with his old group since he values their company and relationship he fostered with them over the past few years.
2) Yes. As a foreman, I would have approached Jay to welcome him to my team and make him comfortable in the new group and build new relationships as he meets the new members.
3) If I was in Jay's shoes, I would make an attempt to get to know the fellow mates. I would have joined the new group, introduced myself and take the opportunity to meet new people. I know that my old friends will remain and will always be there for me.
Jay would eat with his new friends as they were his new team members and he would grab the opportunity to make connections with them.
If I would have been in one of the foremen’s place ,I would have organised for orientation program so that he would get familiar with the new working environment and with the new employees.
If I was in a Jay’s shoes I would have definitely made new connections with new members by introducing myself to them.
Thank you, we appreciate your meaningful addition.
1-Jay firstly have a conversation with their old friends n then can joined the new group so that he can get equally maintain the balance
2- as if I will be in foreman's place I would go n organised for the orientation program so that it would be easier for jay to get in deep with the role about there work n also get in touch with there new collegues
3:-if I would in jay shoes ... I m perfectly gona make the balance between the both n with that I can easily get the functions to be done smoothly.
Thank you, we appreciate your meaningful addition.
